People in creative endeavors are often asked if they've always been artistic.

Years ago my 7th grade class was assigned
the task of creating a painting, with the addition of a story or poem to round
out the project. The details escape me; I was a determined out-the-window-starer and it was not unusual for me to miss the fine points.

of the written half of the assignment was that the movement of pigment on paper
inspired me to write something about “…watercolor skies…” I’m sure it was earnest
and sappy. And then I promptly forgot about the whole thing, windows nearby grabbing my attention with interesting shapes and shadows.

a packet in her hand. Not used to being singled out, my thoughts were something like “Why you lookin’ at me like that?” Excuses began to form quickly in
the back of my panicked brain.

A year or so ago I took an outdoor painting class. We students
anticipated receiving the holy grail of plein air painting; the magic that
transforms simple rolling hills into slashes of paint strokes in brilliant hues

grass early in the day. Our instructor made it all sound so worthy. So very artistic.

We met early, 7 am, ready to paint. No sun came creeping over the
horizon to light the hills and lift autumn shadows from their moorings. In place of the anticipated fiery ball of orange and pink, heavy grey clouds full of drizzle wrapped themselves around us. And then the wind picked up. And because
we all paid for the privilege, and by golly we were plein air artists, we began
painting.
For centuries artists would grind their own pigment, mixing it
with oil to make just enough paint to get them through the day. More recently clever
artists would use pig bladders, stuffing them full of pre-mixed pigment, and
poking a pin through the skin when they needed paint. Working anywhere away
from a studio was difficult and impractical. And pigs didn't like it much either.

Not to worry, I'll get to it...some day.

As a visual person, that is, an individual who gets, keeps and dispenses most experience and knowledge via images in my brain, the reaction I felt this morning upon wandering into our yard was one of utter, sheer delight.

And just so we're all in agreement that I'm an artist, and this is primarily and art blog, I'll use art-y terms to show you why:
If you'll excuse me from my intellectual pursuit, I'm going to sit on the patio with my Handsome Husband. It's a good day to turn off the theory and enjoy the here and now, and simply...enjoy.Pattyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17485661455216172719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3745433199120381104.post-78886623149000175482016-05-22T08:28:00.002-07:002016-05-22T08:28:47.385-07:00WildflowersWildflower gardens are the best. That's the flat out truth.

A goal of mine for years has been to paint flowers, either in their natural setting or in jars, vases and whatever else I can find to put them in. (sorry Mrs. Gallant. "In which to put them".)

Who knew that these delicate lovelies would be such a challenge to harness in paint?

The textures, colors and tangles are harder for me to keep track of than the acres of blue sky and flat horizon that has been my stock in trade for the last many years.

The painting started out so beautifully. Peonies holding up pink heads full of promise, caressed by delicate catmint...oh!

Sadly my skills were not up to the task. Yet. It'll come.

That's my mantra. It'll come, be patient. It'll come. Be patient. It'llcome, bepatient. It'llcomebepatient...it'llcomebepatientit'llcomebepatient.........

We've stared into the faces of Mt. Rushmore, dipped our toes into the Pacific Ocean. While HH was otherwise occupied, I cruised a few graveyards in New Orleans and watched a fellow stand still for a good long time.

I just found my next destination.

For us art geeks, this is just the coolest thing ever:

Every couple of years the Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney, Nebraska (where else?) hosts a very classy fundraising event.

Over 50 artists from Nebraska are invited to participate by making a few pieces of their artwork available through either a silent or public auction. Two things make this event pretty great. The first is that at least half of the invited artists are women, thankyew very much, and the other is that the artist is offered a respectable percent of the final price. This puts the Museum of Nebraska Art in the forefront of classy fundraising events.

“Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”

― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

This quote came to mind recently. As you may know, I experienced a great and sudden change last week when my carefully laid-out trays of pastel sticks leapt off the table and scattered themselves across my studio floor.

Imagine confetti during a parade down 5th Avenue in New York City, only not nearly as much fun.

I’m usually fairly careful about the way my pastel trays are organized; like hues in one area, arranged lightest to darkest. That way I know that if I’m looking for a dark dull warm red, it’s going to be in one small area, maybe 20 square inches. If it’s not there, I don’t own it. No time is wasted pawing through blues or yellows; lights or brights, scouring acres of potential for just the right color.

Locating a particular stick of pigment became automatic, just the way I like it. No time for distraction, there’s a painting waiting for attention.

It has been proven that the brain loves patterns and habits. Over time certain movements are hard wired into the circuitry of our grey matter so that no time is lost thinking about, well, everything.
This explains why Frankenstein’s monster walked so oddly. Where your brain and mine take over the complex task of placing one foot in front of the other, balancing and coordinating hundreds of muscles, the monster had to figure it out on the go, so to speak. If he’d had a chance to practice just a little longer before his official debut to the public, things might have turned out differently.

A hundred years or so later, Henry Ford, industrialist and car collector, said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”

Since Doctor Frankenstein made a monster and that didn’t go so well, I’ll listen to Ford and accept some change.
My pastels are now, rather brazenly I think, arranged in a manner that has my brain saying, “huh?”

Look out Madame Frankenstein. There’s a new bride in town.

My brain’s circuits are humming with change. I reach for a habitual warm blue and find a brighter, greener color in its place. A tangy scarlet has replaced a more humble red - why not grab it and see what happens? What, am I going to create a monster?

Well, sometimes yes, but more often than not, my brain is pleased with the new activity.

I'm not suggesting that you go all Doctor Frankenstein and start making great and sudden changes, but a little tweak to the usual can get you to new and interesting places.Pattyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17485661455216172719noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3745433199120381104.post-47739368234326182382016-02-17T15:33:00.000-08:002016-02-17T15:33:23.791-08:00Me and My TownChannel 10/11 News stopped by a few weeks ago to hang out in Geneva and see what makes this community so special.

Just east of town a few miles sits a short bridge over a dusty creek. I don't know if the creek even has a name, or if it travels very far. I do know that in the early spring, warm breezes pass over the dry grass and through the trees to warm the sand and melt ice in the creek bed.

In the spirit of generosity, this painting will be sold at silent auction on February 13th during the Fillmore County Hospital Foundation's Charitable Gala event.

Bidding starts at $200. Here's how to jump in:

Email Christin and let you know you're very very very interested in owning this lovely little painting.

I've shared this many times before: resolutions and I have never gotten along. In my mind a resolution requires a powdered wig and a gavel, a Robert's Rules kind of vote complete with a second, and two-thirds vote for approval. Resolutions seem to be stamped with an expiration date, which means you either did it - or you didn't. Once you've done it, well, what next? And if you didn't do it? Then what?

Rather than resoluteness as an improvement plan, I have used Christine Kane's Word for the Year tool to challenge and encourage myself toward goals and general self betterment.

The point is to select a word that will lead you into and through the next 350-some odd days ahead.
I've used Up, Engage and Allow, which have been instructional and very useful. I'll also admit that I had totally forgotten one year's word. Maybe that year's word was "resolution".

This year's word came to me unexpectedly but quite clearly, like a Eureka! moment in the shower.

Generosity.

Before long it became clear that it was meant to be my word, as over the course of the morning I had multiple opportunities to give it a workout. Evidently the universe believes I need some schooling.

Generosity is about amounts of things; time, kindness, patience, help, and yes, money. Generosity toward others, and perhaps even especially, toward myself. Generosity in spirit and from my pocketbook.

I'm anxious to experience how the thread of generosity will weave its way through my life in the year.

How about you? What word works for you?

Not to be deterred, I headed to the public library. After waiting in line for one of a dozen computers, I found myself wedged in between two

Another great Kaleidoscope of Art event has been safely tucked in for the year. The Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney, Ne. celebrates artists and art patrons by hosting 30 artists for their annual holiday fundraiser.

MONA was in its infancy when I was growing up in Kearney. It has developed into a first class museum celebrating artists who have ties to Nebraska through heritage or subject matter. This year nearly 700 visitors passed through the front doors to see what area artists have been working on for this special weekend.
My answer to a toss-off question he asked surprised us both.

Had this been a successful event, and why?

Evidently others had responded in the usual way; art work had sold, money had changed hands, or at the very least hopeful contacts had been made for future reference.
Those are, of course, excellent markers of success. Mine was slightly different. The words that popped out of my mouth were, "Yes it has been successful, because I want to come back next year."

Yes. Yes I do.

These events are a challenge, at least for me. There's the unique preparation for an event of this kind, as well as overnight arrangements, hauling in and setting up, taking down and hauling out. I'm pooped before the doors open for business. Plus I'm a little (or a lot) introverted, and engaging in 2 days of conversations can leave me feeling a little drained. Often times I leave these affairs thinking, "...never again...".

Yet the answer to Rick's question was, "I'll be back. Why? I made some new friends, caught up with others, and actually had a really terrific time. MONA is a great place to share art and conversation. Plus they provide really good cookies. Oh, and yes, there were sales. That too."
When I was a child my family would load up the old station wagon, the one minus seat belts and airbags, pack it full of children and suitcases and head out of town to visit relatives. In preparation my mother would show me the plan; carefully unfolding a map
of the United States, she used her finger to follow a line as it wandered and
wiggled around and through little towns, big cities and the gaps in between
until we bumped into the little dot which was our destination.
I can still feel my confusion when we crossed the
great Missouri River as planned and found that Iowa was not at all what I
expected. On our map, the guide my family used to plot our trip and keep us from getting lost in the jungle or falling off the edge of the world, the map that was printed by a
respectable publishing company and was, by all accounts, the best representation of
our country’s roads that could be found, Iowa was pink. Nebraska was green, of course. South Dakota was yellow. Iowa was pink.

in Nebraska are under construction all the time. Even so, there is still a
general understanding that if I am lost, all I have to do is drive south on a
paved road. Eventually I’ll end up in Kansas. And from there I’ll know, sort
of, where I am in the world.

Finding a consistent route to success in this art business on your own is next to

Or even a few possible ways (excluding of course those routes which most certainly will take you into No Man's Land). Despite the distance between towns in this part of the world there is a sincere appreciation for the fine arts. Take that, Big City.

During the evening a smooth, on-the-ball collector quietly purchased Windswept, a lovely pastel of mine that expresses the chill beauty of open space in rural Nebraska after a brutally cold snow storm. Gentleman Collector has a discerning eye, so I was doubly pleased. As I related this purchase to Handsome Husband, a friend listening in whispered with great regret, "No kidding? But I wanted that one." His disappointment was both gratifying and charming.
In an equally surprising and gratifying turn, Handsome Husband, whose taste runs more to rubber dinosaur and shoot'em up movies, purchased "Willa Cather Collected Stories" for his personal library. HH credits his 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Griffin, for planting the seed. He recounted her dedication and love for Cather's work all these years later which was of course lost on a 4th grade boy. In the shadow of Cather's presence, as an adult he was intrigued. May wonders never cease.

We left Red Cloud last night with a sense of deep appreciation for so much; for the work of Willa Cather herself; for those who work to preserve her legacy; for those who appreciate the artistic efforts of others; and for a certain 4th grade teacher who planted a small seed so many years ago.
The answer is surprisingly easy. Get yourself some art. Plunk it on your desk between the
pencil cup and stapler so you can see it easily. Better yet, really invest in your well-being and acquire a
larger piece. Hang it on the wall, right over the chair where your boss
plants herself. You can pretend to pay attention while gazing at something
really important – like an image of the great big beautiful world around you. And feel your stress melt away.
